Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Bandung (Tourism Institute of Bandung) was formerly under the department of Indonesian Tourism, arts and culture. The building of Bandung Tourism Higher Education began when Sekolah Kejuruan Perhotelan (Hotel Vocational School) was established in 1959, this vocational high school wasl under the department of education and culture. In 1962 this school was changed into Sekolah Kejuruan Perhotelan dan Perestoranan (Hotel and Restaurant Vocational School) under the department of land transportation.
On March 11th 1963 Akademi Perhotelan dan Perestoranan (Hotel and Restaurant Academy) was established to further study for hotel and restaurant school graduates, the length of study was for 3 years. This academy was changed into Akademi Perhotelan National (National Hotel Academy) on March 8 th 1965. This was the first academy in Indonesia for hotel study. On March 7 th 1967, the department of land transportation then joined the National Hotel Academy with Hotel and Restaurant Vocational School, the name became Pusat Pendidikan Kepariwisataan (Tourism Education Centre). The name was changed again into Akademi Perhotelan National (National Hotel Academy) on Januari 6 th 1970.
In 1973 the Indonesian government held a relationship with the Swiss government in hotel field. On July 21 th 1973 National Hotel Academy was changed into Pusat pendidikan Perhotelan (Hotel Education Centre) but then National Hotel Institute (NHI) was more well known. This National Hotel Institute with its famous abbreviation NHI, is still commonly so called by public. As the needs of manpower in tourism increased, on July 21 th 1979, NHI was enlarged into National Hotel and Tourism Institute (NHTI). The new departments such as Tours and Travel and Tourism Management were added.
On November 11 th 1981 NHTI was changed into Balai Pendidikan dan Latihan Pariwisata Bandung (Bandung Tourism Training and Education Bureau) as the training and educational centre for Tourism, Post and Telecommunications. This bureau was under the department of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications. To increase the quality in tourism education in Indonesia, then the president of Indonesian Republic on November 1th 1993 released a presidential decree No.101 1993, that the bureau was changed into Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Bandung (Tourism Institute of Bandung). As the follow up, diplom IV program was opened since then. Indonesian People now call it STP Bandung as the stand for Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Bandung.
